With the help of www.codecademy.com, we will walk and talk you through the first steps to writing your own code in a programming language called PHP. This short intro class is aimed at absolute beginners, who have little or no knowledge of programming, as well as people with experience of programming who would like to refresh their coding skills – for example, if you already program in another language but would like to learn a new one! Children who know how to use a computer are more than welcome, too! Feel free to bring your young ones and share a laptop with them. We’ll have a team of volunteers from Manchester Girl Geeks on hand to help you if you get stuck, and as always, there will breaks for tea, biscuits and chats with other girl geeks. For our July tea party, we'll be visiting the amazing Collider exhibition at MOSI. We'll all go in one big group, in the afternoon, and will gather in the entrance foyer at 1pm. Tickets to the exhibition are usually £7/£5, but we'll be getting a group discount, so the more the merrier. After we're done at MOSI we'll be heading to Hey Little Cupcake, in Spinningfields, to grab our usual traditional tea and cake!

Come on a journey inside the largest scientific experiment ever constructed. Buried deep under the border between Switzerland and France, CERN's Large Hadron Collider is the work of 10,000 men and women from across the globe, united in their quest to uncover the fundamental building blocks of our universe.

This immersive exhibition blends theatre, video and sound art with real artefacts from CERN, recreating a visit to the famous particle physics laboratory.

We'll take you behind the scenes to witness the uncovering of the Higgs boson, explore the 27km collider and its cathedral-sized detector caverns, and discover how studying the subatomic world can point the way to a fuller understanding of our universe.

See history being made. Meet engineers who build the impossible. Walk the tunnels of CERN. Stand in the heart of a collision. Witness a moment of discovery. Step inside the world's greatest experiment.

Manchester Girl Geeks is pleased to announce that for our August tea party event, we'll be joined by physicist Dr Helen Czerski, who'll be coming to give a talk and stick around for some Q&A.

Some animals can see in the dark, some can use turbulence to navigate towards a scent and some can detect sounds that are too high-pitched for humans to hear. They’re seeing and using aspects of the physical world that humans are oblivious to. Join Helen as she talks about the physics behind some incredible adaptations within the wild kingdom.

Helen is a Physicist, oceanographer and broadcaster with a passion for science, sport, books, creativity, hot chocolate and investigating the interesting things in life. She currently works at UCL (University College London) in London, and is a science presenter for the BBC.

Join us on Sunday 10th August from 2-4pm, at the shiney new TechHub offices on Lever Street. Tickets are £3 and as always, there'll be tea and cake - bring along your animals/sensory organ themed bakes (possibly our strangest cake theme so far). All welcome!

Manchester Girl Geeks and Wikimedia UK presents Wikipedia Editing Day

Spaceportx, 24-26 Lever St, Manchester
10am-4pm, Sunday 23th November
Tickets £4 (including lunch)

Manchester Girl Geeks presents an introduction to editing Wikipedia. Practically everyone uses the free encyclopaedia to find out about the world - but have you ever tried adding to it? Women are sorely underrepresented in editing and contributing to Wikipedia articles, and we aim to shift the balance.

Helpers from Wikimedia UK and Manchester Girl Geeks will show you how to take your first steps as a Wikipedia contributor, and can provide more advanced help to those who've already dabbled. Bring along your favourite sources and add to the body of knowledge together.

The editing day will include separate areas for beginners and people who already know how to edit Wikipedia - if you attended our event last year, or you already have experience of editing, there'll be a more advanced area where you can get on with editing, and have help on more advanced topics. If you're not experienced, trainers will take you through the basics of logging in and editing, as well as give you some ideas of how to contribute.

Cakeipedia, from our previous event

The day runs from 10am-4pm, and refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

What to bring:
- A laptop/computer, on which to edit; if you don't have one you can bring, please get in touch beforehand and we can sort something out
- Reference materials on topics you'd like to write about, such as books, papers or journals.

In October, Manchester Science Festival are hosting MegaMenger - an international fractal building project, involving building a funky mathematical shape from pieces of card, which is happening in over 20 locations around the world. By the end of October, over a million business cards will be used to build a giant fractal.

The Manchester build is happening at MOSI, and they've asked if we can help to pre-build some parts to go towards their main fractal. Of course we know what we're doing - we've done it before! Click here to see some photos (by the lovely Emma Farrer) from our fractal building workshop in 2011.

There'll be cards to fold, cubes to build and fractals to assemble, plus instructions to read, as well as hopefully cake to eat, tea to drink and laughs to be had. Who's in? Come along and we'll show you what to do, and you can meet some of our members and make new friends.

AGM: Before this event, from 12pm, we'll also be holding our AGM, and everyone is welcome to come along. We'll be lunching and AGMing in the cafe at MOSI. If you have any ideas about what you'd like to see us doing in the upcoming year, come along and share!

For our December event, we're teaming up with various Raspberry Pi organisations around Manchester to put together a Raspberry Pi-themed afternoon of fun! We'll have a range of different activities to have a go at, hopefully including:

- Basic setup tutorial
- Sonic Pi - making music using your pi
- Mathematica intro tutorial
- Raspberry Pi add-ons including PiStop, PiDie and Unicorn Hat
- Portable Pipsta printers for Pi
- Scratch tutorials and gaming

We're being supported by the lovely 4Tronix and Pimoroni, who will be sending along lots of fun Pi toys, which we'll also have available to buy on the day as well as having a go at playing with them.

If you own a Raspberry Pi, we'd love for you to bring it along and use it for the different activities. If you don't, we have a limited number of places available for people to borrow a Pi to use on the day, if they can't bring one. If you were thinking of getting one, here's your excuse! If you're coming along with a friend, you'll only need as many 'borrow a pi' tickets as you'll want computers - so if you're happy to share, only book one 'borrow a pi' place between you.

We'll also be holding a 'Show & Tell' for people who've done something cool with their Pi - maybe you'd like to show us something awesome you've made in Minecraft or Scratch, or your cool Raspberry Pi case mod, or a project you're working on that's Pi-based. Please let us know if you think you'd like to show something off - it doesn't have to be very good! It's all about sharing our experience, and you may be able to get some pointers as to where to take it next.

As usual, we'll have tea, coffee, squash and baked goods - if you feel inspired to create an R-Pi themed cake, biscuit or other delicious treat, we'd love to see it! Although let's be honest, we'd really love to eat it.

We're very pleased to announce that for our February Girl Geek Tea Party, and to celebrate the upcoming solar eclipse, we have a space-themed event:

COMEDY IN SPACE!

Confirmed space geek Chella Quint hosts an afternoon celebrating the funny women of space in this touring show. This line up of award-winning comedians, poets, actors and scientists will be cosmic, intergalactic and out of this world. Expect laughter and astrophysics in equal measure, plus all the flying saucers you can eat!

Chella Quint, our compere, is a Sheffield-based comedian, education researcher, designer and science communicator who is originally from Brooklyn, New York. She started up Comedy in Space! to showcase women being funny and promoting STEM all at the same time. She regularly performs at Science Showoff and she hosted a comedy show live from CERN for their 60th anniversary celebrations! Chella moonlights as an amateur astronomer and her favourite nebula is the Horse Head Nebula, and her favorite exoplanet is Keplar 22B. She owns a space onesie and is not afraid to wear it in public. (@chellaquint)

Steph Kerr is an environmental chemist and science communicator. She enjoys making science-themed playlists and previously hosted the Science Brainwaves radio show. She currently hosts SciCommPi(e) meet ups, is a Sheffield ScienceGrrl, and was a finalist in the Sheffield Famelab heats.  Her favourite constellation is Orion and she really wants to see the Aurora Borealis. (@stephkerr)

Sarah Thomasin is a comic performance poet living in Sheffield who has been published in Now Then Magazine and in two English PEN collections, and has been commissioned to write science and sex education poems in three different countries. She is the Off the Shelf Festival Poetry Slam Winner 2010.  Every year between 14 March and 21 June she writes 100 poems. Her favourite topics to write about are science fiction, science fact, and current events. (@wordgeeksarah)

Kate McCabe is an American comic and improviser. She works with ComedySportz Manchester (helping to bring fun to all the families) and also runs a comedy showcase for nerds called Sidekick Comedy in Manchester's village. Her favourite non-powered superhero is Batman. Her favourite powered superhero is Nightcrawler. Her favourite space-based superhero is Groot. She likes looking at stars and finds the concept of outer space generally overwhelming. (@katemccabesays)

Carly Tarett is an actor, a writer / performer and improviser with ComedySportz Manchester. She loves space, but used to get told off in English class for staring into its mysterious depths. She has performed her work from Canada to the West End with her three shows to date: Princess Dee, Sinful, and Life. Catch her newest show 'Time' on the 11th March at the Oldham Coliseum as part of their 'First Break' new writing festival. (@carlytarett)

Katie Steckles is a mathematician who got a book about space for Christmas. She works as a maths communicator, telling people about maths in schools, theatres, comedy clubs and at science festivals, as well as through various blogs, podcasts and maths toy shops. She enjoys mucking about with computers and knitting mathematical objects. (@stecks)

We'll also have our usual tea/coffee and cake on the side - plus flying saucer sweets - so if you feel like baking something spacey to bring along please do (please make a note of any earth-based allergens)! Deely boppers with planets on the end optional.

This event is usually run as an adult comedy evening, but we've asked the performers to make it suitable for an audience aged 12+, since it's during the day. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Gender diversity still poses a major challenge in the IT industry, with women making up less than 20 per cent of the IT workforce and the number in senior positions remaining stubbornly low [1].

How can we #MakeITHappen for women?

How can we get more women into senior positions? How can we encourage talented women and girls to consider IT as a serious career option alongside Medicine or Law?

The number of women in key roles in the technology industry has remained roughly unchanged for 10 years, according to a recent Gartner report. Will it remain the same for the next 10 years? How can we make IT happen for women?

Come along and join the discussion. Be inspired!

We have three amazing speakers:

Gillian Arnold, Chair of British Computer Society’s Women’s Network and Director of IT Services and Recruitment Company Tectre Ltd. Winner of the 2012 Everywoman Inspiration of the year award in 2012, GEM Tech Award for BCSWomen in 2014 and co-author of Women in IT: Inspiring the Next Generation.

Louise Nickson, Senior Manager, Consulting, Deloitte MCS Ltd, member of the Deloitte Women in Technology Network

Rana Tassabehji, Senior Lecturer, Bradford School of Management and leading researcher on the project ‘Technology and Tiaras’, a cross country investigation into what facilitates women working in the technology sector and how gender influences technology innovation.

In the tradition of Manchester Girl Geeks, this event will be fun and highly interactive including debate, flash talks and panel sessions.

Event Details:

We're having a musical tea party, with four awesome talks on music and tech.

Marieke Navin from the Museum of Science and Industry will be talking about the Hooked on Music project, and how they've used catchy pop songs to give an insight into music and memory.

Caro CLocal electronic musician and studio recording engineer Caro C will be talking about how effects such as compression and EQ are used on vocals, whether this is a good thing, and how some female artists like Bjork and Kelly Clarkson are taking more control over the way their voices are recorded and mixed. Warning: you may not listen to (pop) music in the same way again!

Vizii Jasmine Cox and Charlotte Hoare will be demoing a music visualisation app aimed to get teenagers interested in digital media. They will talk about how they came up with the inital idea and how it ended up on the BBC website. They will also explain some of the web technology behind it.

Rachael Moat was named Tech4Good's IT Volunteer of the Year for developing low-cost customised music technology. She'll be showing us how to make music with spaghetti hoops and custard.

As with all our Tea Parties, you are all very welcome to bring cake. If you can make it music-themed, that would be brilliant.

After this, we'll be continuing the merriment with our annual Christmas Party, which you're welcome to join us for. To give us an idea of numbers, if you're staying please book a (free) ticket for the party, Manchester Girl Geeks + Science Grrl Xmas Party, which is also where you'll find more information about the party.

Children under 16 are very welcome to come to the Tea Party and the Christmas Party, if accompanied by an adult. The content of the talks will vary, but children under 12 may find some content difficult to follow. The talks will be around 20 minutes each, and there will be a break halfway through the Tea Party for refreshments.

Both the Tea Party and the Christmas Party will be on the ground floor of Madlab, which is wheelchair accessible. if you have any other access needs, please get in touch.
